Life story aside, I’m distracting myself from very sobering, serious things right now, which means I’m going to daydream about more Toyotas.
This includes crap I had posted from the last time I blerged about this, so instead, let me just vaguely rank in terms of want (not necessarily likelihood):
1. RA64 Celica GT(-S)
2. Camry SE V6 Coupe
3. SC400
4. Hilux (because dammit I love little pickups)
5. BJ70 (made of unobtainium)
6. Tercel 4wd wagon (I would have never sold mine if I had a bigger garage)
7. Pre-facelift Tacoma, 4x4 manual 2.7L extra cab
8. Toyota T100 4x4 extra cab SR5
I feel like I should stick to one of the top three just so I can have a new type of driving experience, especially the Celica and SC, having never owned a RWD passenger car. But I love pickups, and the Tercel of course. My driveway is very small and tight, so the T100 is pushing the limits on that.

I would say to go with the Celica and SC as well, because to me the Camry SE is nothing more than a standard V6 Camry with two doors missing. I dig the Celica but I think it’s harder to find than the SC.

My top three out of your list would be:
1. BJ70
2. SC400
3. RA64 Celica GT(-S)
The Camry SE V6 Coupe gets an honorable mention especially if it’s manual

4,5,6 for me. But those louvres and flares...

I’ve done some digging but I’m near certain that you cannot get the SE (which comes with the V6 only, as the top trim) with a stick.
![]() 11/05/2015 at 23:52 |

You’re effectively correct, though the ‘96 SE does have leather seats (ooooh ahhhh). But for 2k-5k more, I could just get an actual luxury coupe with RWD (the SC). And yeah, finding that Celica looks like it’ll worse than trying to find my first Tercel.

All-Trac Turbo Celica is best Celica because rally homologation car.

I’d have more success playing the lottery than finding that car

I might have seen somewhere on the internet that someone had a manual with the V6, probably the 4-door version. I could be wrong, but if in fact such a combo exists, it would either be a custom swap job or a true unicorn.

I had a Tacoma this gen, but it was a 3.4l, with a manual trans, of all the vehicles I have ever sold I regret this one the most. Partially because it would now be owth three times what I sold it for, but mostly because it was a FREAKIN BADASS little truck.

Pretty sure this is a Gyoza
![]() 11/06/2015 at 00:27 |

Yeah they are expensive now and the pre-facelift ones are pretty uncommon. They also had the best colors. Royal blue, seafoam green, cherry red...

There was no manual V6 coupe. The 94 V6 Coupe had a 3VZ-FE, while the 95/96 had a 1MZ-FE. You can also get a supercharger for the 1MZ from TRD, but they’re rare and pricey.

Oh cruel world. So cruel, this world.

What about a Toyota Starlet?
Or a 4x4 Justy...

Much too rare! Even rarer are decent examples

You could get manual V6’s up until 01, I believe, but only in 4 door form. Ratko from ToyotaNation had a V6 coupe with a 5-speed swapped in, but he has an MR2 now (the MR2 turbo shares 5-speeds with the V6 Camry), last I checked.

what about a corona? I still see them pop up on CL every now and then.

Would only consider this one:

My dad used to have one. Sold it to a friend of mine. One day I’m going to try buying it back from him.
You can find them occasionally on Craigslist and eBay. ST165s (like this one) are insanely rare though, because on the first run Toyota didn’t actually think there would be a market for a Celica that cost more than a fully-loaded Supra.

I feel gold Work VS-XX wheels would look better on this.
Also, seeing the rear louvers Celica on top reminds me that I had a neighbor across the street from me who had TWO silver 280z parked on her driveway growing up. I was always curious about what they were and why they had those louvers. They looked like the coolest things ever to me as a kid.

Celica is all kinds of epic levels of cool. What year is it? Is it the one with proper pop up headlights or those weird pop up headlights the early versions had?
![]() 11/06/2015 at 02:24 |
|
Proper, yes. For 84/85. Those weird uncovered pop-ups were 82/83. The celica has had more refreshes and facelifts than a Burbank mother.

Was looking at the picture again. This car and the Starion probably had the best wheels in the 80s on regular people cars

The sc400 is the v8 mk4 supra.
Do it....there cheap.

There’s one of these at a local little car dealer, really tempted if i had a bunch of leftover money i didn’t know what to do with....

Rust happends here. Trust me. Driveline is bulletproof tho, untill snow/ice packs into the engine bay and short the starter. Yes, it turns over on 12V only, but very slowly.

After your boaty-floaty comment on your A6, how could you.

Because most of CL have blown headgaskets, but they are handsome beasts.

sounds like 5,000 miles of reliable driving until you find a 6M to swap in.
![]() 11/06/2015 at 13:13 |

SC400 and manual swap that bizzatch! The Nissan RWD transmissions are an (almost) direct fit with just an adapter plate and flywheel.

Why you no A60 or A70 Supra?
I have been a fan of A70 Mark III Supra for several years now. It is modern looking enough to still look current, rather than classic. Flush glass, fewer trim pieces, radiused edges, etc...
But as 80’s cars become classics, with their flatter surfaces and harder lines... I am really getting a strong want for A60 Supra. I like the front end of the A60 Celica, but the inline-6 and IRS is worth the bodywork change. (A60 Celicas with Supra’s IRS are rare, IIRC)
The odd thing... I got into Supras because I liked Fox Mustangs, but wanted something with a smooth I6 engine rather than I4 or ubiquitous V8, and IRS instead of a stick axle... and all the mods that one could do to a Fox Mustang... make it what A70 Supra already is...
then I re-discovered that A60 Celica-Supra is even more 80’s-era ‘Foxy’, styling wise, where A70, even introduced in 1986, is almost a 90’s era car before it’s time, and before 90’s era cars became jelly-beans.

That split grille, and fitted bumper is fantastic. Absolutely beautifully proportioned. The wagon is cool, but that front end deserves to be on a sleek, gorgeous fastback coupe.
![]() 11/06/2015 at 14:20 |
|
Supra P-type wheels (4x114.3, IIRC) and Mitsubishi StarQuest wheels (5x114.3) are gorgeous OE wheels from that era. The P-type wheels were popular enough that there was a limited run of aftermarket replicas in 17”
So similar, that people with A70 Supras, that want the A60 wheel look... use the StarQuest wheels, even if they are -1” diameter.

I wonder if anyone has combined the 82-83 beveled-front hood and thinner grille with the 84-85 revolving black pop-up lights. That might be kind of a cool look.
![]() 11/06/2015 at 15:15 |

Oh, look... it is . Toyota Corona Mark II. This one resto-modded with a Supra 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo. I wouldn’t even mind it with a 1 or 2JZ-GE naturally aspirated engine, breathing through individual throttle bodies. It would still run smooth and strong, and wouldn’t need that exposed intercooler sticking out like a sore thumb. I wouldn’t mind some of the chrome being retained, rather than black.
I am a fan of the Nissan C110 “Kenmeri” Skyline... but frankly, this coupe may actually be even sexier, and even more rare.
The want is pegged off-scale high.

Thjose wheels look great on the MK3.
